Slack water and maximum current times for the three Outer Banks inlets — Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Inlet and Ocracoke Inlet — predicted by NOAA, today and tomorrow. The current, not the tide, is what moves your boat around in an inlet, and it does not turn when the tide table says high or low.

The rule of thumb every inlet regular knows: the current keeps running after the tide turns. High tide on the beach is a height; slack water in the channel is when the flow actually stops, and in these inlets that can lag the beach tide by an hour or more. Oregon Inlet current — today and tomorrow

Predictions for the channel at the Basnight Bridge (NOAA station ACT6281). Flood runs in toward the sound (roughly west), ebb runs out to sea. On a strong ebb against a southwest wind, the bar gets rough out of all proportion to the forecast — this is the crossing where slack timing earns its keep. How to read these tables

Slack water is the short window when the current stops to reverse — the safe crossing window, usually 20 to 40 minutes wide (how long slack lasts). Max flood is the strongest inbound flow, max ebb the strongest outbound, in knots. Ebb against an onshore wind stands the waves up on the bar; flood with the wind lays them down. These are astronomical predictions — a hard blow or a storm surge can overpower them entirely, so treat them as the schedule, not a guarantee.

Does slack water happen at high tide?

No — that is the classic mistake. Slack in an Outer Banks inlet usually comes well after the beach high or low, sometimes by an hour or more, because the sound keeps filling or draining after the ocean has turned. Use the current tables above, not the tide chart, to time a crossing.

How strong are the currents in the Outer Banks inlets?

Typically 1 to 2 knots at maximum flood or ebb under calm conditions, and stronger where the channel narrows. That is faster than most people can swim — which is why nobody should swim in or near an inlet — and enough to matter to a small boat with the wind against it.
